MHG is the architect for the new development for the Bronxchester Urban Renewal sites in the Melrose neighborhood, the last large assemblage of City-owned vacant land in the South Bronx. Encompassing over 1 million square feet of development, La Central will be a thriving , mixed-use development, with a total of close to 1000 units of affordable and supportive housing, a new YMCA, and a host of new retail, community, and recreation spaces.
The design vision marries sustainable housing, vibrant community spaces and an active urban grid. Sustainability, resiliency, and active design principals are fully integrated into the development. A combination of onsite cogeneration, extensive use of photovoltaic panels and a super-tight building envelope will provide a sustainable environment for residents. Green roofs will cover 50% of the roof areas, including an urban farm.
